*Main benefits of oval chainrings:
- Pedaling efficiency increases thanks to the minimization of the “dead zone” – since human muscles are unable to maintain a consistent force output throughout the pedal stroke100% consistent power output in the pedal cycle, the oval chainring amplifies the part where the power output is greatest and minimizes the sector where there is practically no output.
- For example, an oval 36T gear behaves like a 34T round gear in the “dead zone” and like a 36T round gear in the effective sector. This effect allows you to quickly overcome the “dead zone” with less energy expenditure and maintain a constant flow of energy into forward motion.
- Pedaling frequency (cadence) increases and the work of the legs becomes smoother – the oval inspires more use of the “pull-push” technique.
- Smoother pedaling helps conserve muscle energy, recover faster, and reduces stress on the knees
- Climbing steep hills becomes easier because, thanks to the more consistent power output, the rear wheel does not spin so easily (we tried it – it’s actually quite difficult to achieve!)
- The oval sprocket helps you learn the correct pedaling technique, so if you go back to using a round chainring in the future, your pedaling technique will be smoother than it was before you switched to the oval chainring.
We encourage anyone who experiences knee pain when cycling or who wants to improve their pedaling technique to try oval chainrings. There is no need to worry that using an oval chainring will mean having to “learn to ride a bike again” – quite the opposite, in fact – pedaling with an oval chainring feels “rounder” than with a round chainring!
