Garmin Varia RearVue 820 Smart Radar and Tail Light

The Garmin Varia RearVue 820 is a next-generation cycling radar that takes road safety to a whole new level. It’s not just a tail light, but a smart safety system that warns you of vehicles approaching from behind from a great distance, giving you time to react and feel safer on the road. Compared to the popular RTL515 model, the 820 series has received significant hardware and software upgrades.

• Enhanced Detection Range: The radar detects vehicles approaching from behind from up to 175 meters away (instead of the previous 140 m), providing even more early warning time
• Vehicle Type and Threat Level Determination: For the first time, the radar can distinguish the size of vehicles (e.g., truck vs. passenger car) and display the threat level (orange or red icon) based on the car’s speed and lateral distance
• Lane-Based Tracking: The radar can detect whether a car is approaching directly from behind or is performing a pass on the left/right, displaying the corresponding info on a compatible Garmin Edge computer screen
• Integrated Brake Light: A built-in accelerometer detects sudden deceleration and changes the light mode to a brighter pattern, warning other road users that you are stopping
• USB-C Charging: The device is finally equipped with a modern USB-C port, making charging faster and more convenient
• Longer Battery Life: The battery lasts up to 10 hours in solid mode and up to 24 hours in day flash mode. In radar-only mode (without the light), the operating time is up to 30 hours
• Maximum Visibility: The bright tail light is visible in daylight from up to 2 km away, and side visibility has also been improved
• Flexible Mounting: The package includes a new, more secure mount suitable for round, D-shaped, and aero-profile seatposts. The device can be mounted “upright” or “upside down” – the radar detects the orientation automatically

New advanced features (vehicle size, threat level, lane tracking) work best with newer Garmin computers (Edge 540, 840, 1040, 1050 and newer) and through the Varia smartphone app. For older devices, the unit functions as a standard radar, similar to the previous RTL515 model.
